We had 3 awesome days on the boat with Carl and Epic Adventures in March 2011.  We based ourselves in a beach house for a week in Tairua. It's a good idea to give yourself a few extra days in the area and book your place on the boat for more than one day in case weather upsets your plans.  The fishing was fantastic. Big kingfish were plentiful - a small one over there is 10-15kg plus. Biggest we caught was just of 20kg but they are caught much bigger than that. We also managed to pick up this 80-100kg Striped Marlin too after trawling for just 45 minutes. It's an awesome place with awesome fishing. Get yourselves over there!
